A nature lover in the hustling and bustling busy city of Kuala Lumpur? Malaysia has made it possible for the residents to enjoy fresh air despite the pollution behind the gates of some forest reserved. Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) is one of the leading institutions in tropical forestry research in the world. Founded in 1929, the former Forest Research Institute became a full-fledged statutory body, governed by the Malaysian Forestry Research and Development Board (MFRDB) under the Ministry of Primary Industries in 1985. Since 2003, FRIM was placed under the purview of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE).

Situated 16km away from the Northwest of Kuala Lumpur, the Institute sits on a 545-ha site adjacent to the Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve in Kepong. Gazetted as a Natural Heritage Site on 10 February 2009 under the National Heritage Act 2005, FRIM was declared as a National Heritage on 10 May 2012. FRIM is working towards attaining the recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are just so many activities that one can do with their family and friends. The first time I was there, I was maybe in my teens (which was a long time ago) and I went with my siblings, uncles, aunt and grandmother. We jungle trekked for a while and did the canopy walk together. For someone with a huge fear of heights, it was not as frightening as I thought it would be despite how high I was in the air. It was quite calming because the trees below looked as if they would catch me if I fall. We ended our trek at the small waterfall and had the Malaysian signature meal, nasi lemak.

The next time, I was there for a breakfast picnic at one of the many gazebos available with my family. It was the most random planned picnic because it was all decided the evening before, but it was fun, nevertheless. After the fulfilling morning breakfast, we went to the nearest water stream and played some frisbees and hanged out on the big stones. I had a good time with my cousins and it was one of the most productive mornings I ever had, especially because it was on Sunday.

The most recent time I went to FRIM was because my mother had a company Family Day happening and she brought us along for the fun. This time, I went for a jog around the area with my father and sister. The night before, it rained quite heavily so the cool and misty air at FRIM was so welcoming and it was one of the best nicest and calming jogs I ever had. After the 5km jogging session, we decided to get on the bicycle that was offered and cycle around the area. Little did I know, there were residents of FRIM living in the area where we cycled. Their houses looked quaint and comfortable, especially if it rains and it will be so calming with the cool breeze blowing through.

I dare say that I will definitely go to FRIM again on a weekend morning or evening for a picnic with family and friends, or a productive morning cycle around the woods and amidst the tall canopy trees. Nothing is better than having cool and clean fresh air to start your day, to be honest!
