The Thousand Islands are located in the waters of Jakarta Bay. These islands are divided into tourism islands, conservations, historical island etc with the characteristic differences among the islands. It is a place where people can enjoy the serenity side of Jakarta. If you want to get fresh air, out of the hustle bustle hectic activity of Indonesia’s capital city, the thousand islands might be the perfect place.  You can enjoy relaxing holiday, a fun adventure or an educative experience in here.

Some recommended islands are as follows:

Pulau Pramuka

Pramuka Island is the centre of Thousand Island’s administrative office and also the centre of the Thousand Islands Marine National Park. With the clean and clear water, Pulau Pramuka is a splendid island for snorkeling or fishing. If you are interested in conservation, you can visit Hawksbill turtle preservation. In this preservation, you can see hundreds of baby turtles hatched. This specie of turtle is unique because its shells slightly change colors, depending on water temperature. The turtles are being kept in the conservation before they are ready to be released into the open ocean.  It was initiated by a local person named Mr. Salim with the purpose to prevent the turtle population especially the species of hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) from extinction.

In addition to Hawksbill turtle conservation, other activities on the island include planting of coastal plants – butun, mangrove, and sea grass – and coral reef preservation. These plants prevent coastal erosion and infiltration of sea water. Mangrove planting is done using the Spaced Cluster method, the nationally-approved method for planting mangroves on small islands using coral sand as the medium. Pulau Pramuka is also the place of a national park in Indonesia. You can also see the waste management community activities or buy their recycled handmade souvenirs.

Not far from Pulau Pramuka, placed a unique restaurant namely Nusa Resto. It is located in the middle of the see hence it is also known as the floating restaurant. The other interesting fact about Nusa Resto restaurant is that you will be able to see a pool full of sharks.

Pulau Kotok

Pulau Kotok is a rescue and translocation center for protected wildlife species including the white-bellied sea eagle (elang laut perut putih, Haliaeetus leucogaster) and the brahminy kite (elang bondol, Haliaster indus), the mascot of the province of DKI Jakarta. If you’re lucky you can watch monitor lizards that roam freely. The weather is quite hot, but it is windy in Pulau Kotok due to huge trees which protect visitors from direct sun.

Pulau Tidung

Tidung Island is divided into two large islands, namely Tidung Besar and Tidung Kecil, connected by the Bridge of Love with a length of approximately 800 meters. There is a myth believed that if a person has courage to jump from the bridge, that person will likely get the love of her/his live soon. From the bridge you can see the coral reefs and fish. If you are not satisfied yet, then swim with the fish. Snorkeling might be an option considering that the water is clear, enabling you to see a variety of creatures and coral reefs. Looking for an excitement rush? Try the banana boat ride; it is as if you are riding motorcycle on the water with many people. You can even request to be thrown into the sea if you wish.
